John Chapter 8

The Gospel According to John

1) (de) And Jesus (poreuomai) departed (eis) into (oros) the mountain (elaia) of olives.

2) (de) And (orthos) early in the morning at daybreak (paraginomai) (palin) he came forth again into the public (eis) and went into (hieron) the temple;

(kai) And (pas) all (laos) the people, all those who are of the same stock and language, (erchomai) came from one place to another (pros) to (autos) him;

(kai) And (kathizo) he made them sit down in order to set, appoint and confer a kingdom on them (kai) and (didasko) to teach, impart instruction and instill doctrine into (autos) them.

3) (de) But (grammateus) the scribes, the religious teachers of the Jews, (kai) and the Pharisees (ago) laid hold of and brought (pros) to (autos) him (gune) a woman (katalambano) that was overtaken (en) in (moicheia) adultery;

(kai) And (histemi) (autos) they made her stand (en) in (mesos) the middle of them,

4) (lego) And they said (autos) to him:

(didaskalos) TEACHER, (houtos) this (gune) woman (katalambano) was taken (epautophoro) in the act (moicheia) of adultery.

5) (de) And Moses (en) in (nomos) the Mosaic Law (entellomai) orders and commands (hemin) us, (toioutos) that such of this kind and sort (lithoboleo) should be killed by stoning, to pelt her with stones:

(oun) Therefore, (tis) what (lego) (su) do you say?

6) (de) And (touto) this (lego) they said, (peirazo) (autos) to maliciously test him and craftily put to the proof his feelings or judgments and tried to test his faith, virtue and character through enticing him to sin, (hina) so that (echo) they might lay hold of him (kai) and (kategoreo) (autos) accuse him before a judge,

(de) But Jesus (kupto) bent down (kato) below, (daktulos) and with his finger (grapho) he wrote (eis) on (ge) the ground, (prospoieomai) as he pretended (me) not to hear them.

7) (de) And (hos) when (epimeno) they remained and continued (erotao) asking (autos) him:

(anakupto) He lifted himself up (epo) and said (pros) to (autos) them:

(anamartetos) He that has not sinned (humon) among you, (protos) (ballo) let him cast the first (lithos) stone (epi) at (autos) her.

8) (kai) And (palin) again (kupto) he bent down (kato) below (grapho) and he wrote (eis) on (ge) the ground.

9) (de) And (akouo) the scribes listened to him and then considered what he had said to them;

(kai) And (elegcho) being convicted with shame and brought into the light (hupo) by (suneidesis) their own conscience of the soul, as distinguishing between what is morally good and bad, (exerchomai) left on their own accord (heis kath heis) one after another, (archomai) beginning (apo) with (presbuteros) the eldest, (eos) until (eschatos) the last in rank:

(kai) And Jesus (kataleipo) was left (monos) alone, (kai) and (gune) the woman (histemi) (en) (mesos) in the presence of him.

10) (de) And Jesus (anakupto) lifted himself up (kai) and (theaomai) he looked upon (medeis) no one (plen) except (gune) the woman (epo) and he said (autos) to her:

(gune) Woman, (pou) where about (eisi) are (ekeinos) they, (sou) your (kategoros) accusers?;

Kategoros is a name given to the devil by the rabbis.

(oudeis) Has no one (katakrino) (se) judged you worthy of punishment and condemned you?

11) (de) And (epo) she said:

(oudeis) No one (kurios) Lord.

(kai) And Jesus (epo) said (autos) to her:

(oude) Neither (ego) do I (katakrino) (se) judge you worthy of punishment and condemn you:

(poreuomai) Continue on your journey, (kai) and (meketi) no longer (hamartano) wander from the path of uprightness and honour to do or go wrong, which is to sin.

12) (oun) With this being so, Jesus (laleo) spoke (palin) again (autos) to them (lego) saying:

(ego) I (eimi) am (phos) the Light of truth and its knowledge, together with the spiritual purity associated with it, that is exposed to the view of all, openly and publicly and the power of understanding moral and spiritual truth (kosmos) of the world:

(akoloutheo) (emoi) He that follows me and becomes my disciple (ou me) will not (peripateo) walk to make his way, regulate his life or conduct himself (en) in (skotia) the darkness due to a want of the Light, being ignorant of divine things with its associated wickedness, (alla) but (echo) he will possess (phos) the Light (zoe) of life.

13) (oun) With this being so, The Pharisee (epo) said (autos) to him:

(su) You (martureo) give testimony (peri) about (seautou) your own self;

(sou) And your (marturia) testimony (esti) is (ou) not (alethes) true.

14) Jesus (apokrinomai) answered (kai) and (epo) said (autos) to them:

(kan) Even if (ego) I (martureo) give testimony (peri) about (emautou) myself, (mou) my (marturia) testimony (esti) is (alethes) true:

(hoti) Because (eido) I know (pothen) from where and what author and giver (erchomai) I came from;
(kai) And (pou) where (hupago) I go away to;

(de) But (humeis) you (ou) do not (eido) know or understand (pothen) from where and what author and giver (erchomai) I came from:

(kai) And (pou) where (hupago) I go away to.

15) (humeis) You (krino) pass judgment (kata) according to (sarx) the flesh;
(ego) I (krino) pass judgment on (ou) no (oudeis) one.

16) (de) And (kai) without a doubt, (ean) if (ego) I (krino) do pass judgment, (emos) my (krisis) sentence of condemnation (esti) is (alethes) truthful:

(hoti) Because (eimi) I am (ou) not (monos) alone and without a companion, (alla) but (ego) I am (kai) together with (pater) the Father (pempo) that sent (me) me.

17) (kai) And (grapho) it is recorded not to be forgotten (de) and (grapho) written down (en) in (humeteros) your (nomos) law, (hoti) that (marturia) the testimony (duo) of two (anthropos) men (esti) is (alethes) truthful.

18) (ego) I (eimi) am (martureo) one testimony (peri) about (emautou) myself, (kai) and (pater) the Father (pempo) that sent (me) me (martureo) is another testimony (peri) about (emou) me.

19) (oun) With this being so, (lego) they said (autos) to him:

(pou) Where about (esti) is (sou) your (pater) Father?

Jesus (apokrinomai) answered:

(oute) You neither (eido) know or understand (eme) me, (oute) nor (mou) my (pater) Father:

(ei) If (eido) you knew and understood (eme) me, (kai) without a doubt, (eido) you would know and understand (mou) my (pater) Father (an) also.

20) (tauta) These (rhema) words Jesus (laleo) spoke (en) in (gazophulakion) the repository of treasure, (didasko) as he taught (en) in (hieron) the temple:

The repository of treasure is used to describe the apartments constructed in the courts of the temple, in which, not only the sacred offerings and things needful for the service were kept, but is where the priests dwelt.

Near the treasury is used of that receptacle mentioned by the rabbis to which were fitted thirteen chests or boxes, i.e. trumpets, so called from their shape, and into which were put the contributions made voluntarily or paid yearly by the Jews for the service of the temple and for the support of the poor.

(kai) And (oudeis) no one (piazo) (autos) laid hold of him to capture or apprehend him to put him in prison;

(hoti) Because (autos) his (hora) certain and fixed definite time (oupo) had not yet (erchomai) arrived.

21) (oun) Therefore, Jesus (epo) said (palin) again (autos) to them:

(ego) I (hupago) go away (kai) and (zeteo) you will seek after (me) me, (kai) and (apothnesko) you will die, of trees which dry up and of seeds which rot when planted, (en) in (humon) your (hamartia) wandering from the path of uprightness and honour, to do or go wrong, which is to sin:

(hopou) Where (ego) I (hupago) go away to, (humeis) you (ou) will not (dunamai) be able, capable, strong and powerful enough (erchomai) to follow me.

22) (oun) With this being so, the Jews (lego) said:

(meti) Perchance, (apokteino) will he kill (heautou) himself? (hoti) Because (lego) he said:

(hopou) Where (ego) I (hupago) go away to, (humeis) you (ou) will not (dunamai) be able, capable, strong and powerful enough (erchomai) to follow me.

23) (kai) And (lego) he said (autos) to them:

(humeis) You (este) are (ek) from (kato) down below;

(ego) I (eimi) am (ek) from (ano) above:

(humeis) You (este) are (ek) from (toutou) this one (kosmos) world;

(ego) I (eimi) am (ou) not (ek) from (toutou) this one (kosmos) world.

24) (oun) Therefore (epo) I said (humin) to you (hoti) that (apothnesko) you will die (en) in (humon) your (hamartia) wandering from the path of uprightness and honour, that which you do wrong, which is to sin:

(gar) For (ean me) unless (pisteuo) you believe (hoti) that (ego) I (eimi) am he, (apothnesko) you will die (en) in (humon) your (hamartia) wandering from the path of uprightness and honour, that which you do wrong, which is to sin.

25) (oun) With this being so, (legos) they said (autos) to him:

(tis) Who (ei) are (su) you?

(kai) And Jesus (epo) said (autos) to them:

(kai) Without a doubt (hostis) who (laleo) I said (humin) to you (arche) from the beginning.

26) (echo) I have (polus) many things (laleo) still to say (kai) and (krino) pass judgment (peri) concerning (humon) you:

(alla) And (pempo) he that sent (me) me (esti) is (alethes) true;

(kago) Even I, this selfsame I (lego) speak (eis) to (kosmos) the world (tauta) these things (hos) that (akouo) I have heard and learned (para) from (autos) him.

27) (ou) And they did not (ginosko) know or understand (hoti) that (lego) he spoke (autos) to them (pater) of the Father.

28) (tote) Then at that time Jesus (epo) said (autos) to them:

(hotan) As soon as (hupsoo) you have lifted up on high, to exalt and to raise to dignity, honour and happiness (huios) the Son (anthropos) of man, (oun) then (ginosko) you will know and understand (hoti) that (ego) I (eimi) am he (kai) and (poieo) I perform (oudeis) nothing (apo) of (emautou) myself;

(alla) But (kathos) just as (mou) my (pater) Father (didasko) has taught me, (laleo) I speak (tauta) these things.

29) (kai) And (pempo) he that sent (me) me (esti) is (meta) with (emou) me:

(pater) The Father (ou) has not (aphiemi) left (me) me (monos) alone and without a companion;

(hoti) Because (ego) I (pantote) at all times (poieo) perform (arestos) that which is pleasing and agreeable (autos) to him.

30) (autos) As he (laleo) spoke (tauta) these words, (polus) many (pisteuo) believed (eis) on (autos) him.

31) (oun) Therefore, Jesus (ego) said (pros) to the Jews (ho) that (pisteuo) believed (autos) him:

(ean) If (humeis) you (meno) remain and continue to endure (en) in (emos) my (logos) sayings of God, (este) then you are (mou) my (mathetes) disciples (alethos) of a truth.

32) (kai) And (ginosko) you will know and understand (aletheia) what is true in the things belonging to God and the duties of man, moral and religious truth;

(kai) And (aletheia) what is according to the truth (eleutheroo) (humas) will make you free and set you at liberty from the dominion of wandering from the path of uprightness and honor to do that which is wrong, which is sin.

33) (apokrinomai) The Jews responded (autos) him:

(esmen) We are Abraham’s (sperma) offspring, the son of Terah and the founder of the Jewish nation;
(kai) And (popote) never at any time (douleuo) were we of those who have become slaves to some base power, to do service, obey, submit to, yield to or give ourselves up to (oudeis) any one:

(pos) How and in what way (su) do you (lego) say (hoti) that (ginomai) we will be made (eleutheros) freeborn?

In a civil sense, one who is not a slave and of one who ceases to be a slave, freed from servitude, is free, exempt, unrestrained and not bound by obligation.

In an ethical sense: free from the yoke of the Mosaic Law.

34) Jesus (apokrinomai) answered (autos) them:

(amen) Surely, truly and of a truth (amen) with absolute trust and confidence (lego) I say (humin) to you:

(hoti) That (pas) all (poieo) that make with the names of things made, to produce, construct, form and fashion to be the authors of (hamartia) wandering from the path of uprightness and honour to do or go wrong, which is sin, (esti) is (doulos) a slave, bondman, servant and attendant (hamartia) to wandering from the path of uprightness and honor to go wrong, which is to sin.

35) (de) And (doulos) a slave, bondman, servant and attendant (ou) does not (meno) remain continually to endure (en) in (oikia) the house (eis) for (aion) eternity:

(huios) The Son (meno) remains continually to endure (eis) for (aion) eternity.

36) (oun) With these things being so, (ean) if  (huios) the Son will make (humeis) you (eleutheroo) free and set you at liberty from the dominion of sin, (esomai) you will be (eleutheroo) free and set at liberty from the dominion of sin, (ontos) truly in reality.

37) (eido) I know and understand (hoti) that (este) you are Abraham’s (sperma) offspring;

(alla) But (zeteo) you seek after and strive (apokteino) to kill (me) me, (hoti) because (emos) my (logos) sayings (ou) do not (choreo) have a place to be received (en) in (humin) you.

38) (ego) I (laleo) speak (hos) that which (horao) I see with my eyes and see with my mind, that I perceive and know (para) from (mou) my (pater) Father:

(kai) Without a doubt (oun) therefore, (humeis) you (poieo) perform (hos) that which (horao) you see and have become acquainted with by experience (para) from (humon) your (pater) father.

39) (apokrinomai) They responded to his saying (kai) and (epo) said (autos) to him:

Abraham (esti) is (hemon) our (pater) father.

Jesus (lego) said (autos) to them:

(ei) If (en) you were Abraham’s (teknon) offspring and children, (poieo) you would perform (an) (ergon) the works of Abraham.

40) (de) But (nun) at this present time (zeteo) you seek after and strive (apokteino) to kill (me) me, (anthropos) a man (hos) that (laleo) speaks (humin) to you (aletheia) according to the truth in the things belonging to God and the duties of man, moral and religious truth, (hos) that (akouo) I have learned by hearing (para) from (theos) God:

Abraham (ou) did not (poieo) perform and carry out (touto) this thing.

41) (humeis) You (poieo) perform and carry out (ergon) the deeds and actions (humon) of your (pater) father.

(oun) Therefore (epo) they said (autos) to him:

(hemeis) We (ou) are not (gennao) born (ek) out of (porneia) fornication and adultery, the worship of idols and of the defilement of idolatry;

(echo) We have (heis) one (pater) father, (theos) God.

42) (oun) Then Jesus (epo) said (autos) to them:

(ei) If (theos) God (en) were (humon) your (pater) Father (an) you would (agapao) dearly love (eme) me:

(gar) For (ego) I (exerchomai) came forth being born of God (kai) and (heko) have arrived (ek) out of (theos) God;

(gar) For (oude) not even (erchomai) I have come (apo) out of (emautou) myself, (alla) but (ekeinos) from he (apostello) that appointed (me) me.

43) (diati) Why (ou) do you not (ginosko) know and understand (emos) my (lalia) dialect, mode of speech and pronunciation?

Speech which discloses the speaker's native country.

(hoti) It is because (ou) you are not (dunamai) able, capable, strong and powerful enough (akouo) to comprehend and understand (emos) my doctrine, teaching and sayings of God.

44) (humeis) You (este) are (ek) out of (pater) your father (diabolos) the devil, the author of evil, persecuting good men, estranging mankind from God and enticing them to wander from the path of uprightness and honor to do wrong, (kai) together with (epithumia) the desires, cravings and longing for what is forbidden, the lusts (humon) of your (pater) father (thelo) determines (poieo) what you carry out and perform.

(ekeinos) He (en) was (anthropoktonos) a manslayer and murderer (apo) from (arche) the beginning of the active cause, (kai) and (ou) did not (histemi) establish and stand (en) in (aletheia) what is true belonging to God and the duties of man, moral and religious truth, (hoti) because (esti) there is (ou) absolutely no (aletheia) truth (en) in (autos) him.

(hotan) When (laleo) he speaks (pseudos) a lie of perverse, impious and deceitful precepts, (laleo) he speaks (ek) out of (idios) what belongs to him:

(hoti) Because (esti) he is (pseustes) a liar, (kai) and (pater) the father (autos) of them who breaks their faith, who are false and faithless men.

45) (de) And (hoti) because (ego) I (lego) teach (aletheia) according to the truth, (ou) You do not (pisteuo) believe (moi) me.

46) (tis) Who (ek) out of (humon) you (elegcho) corrects (me) me (peri) because of (hamartia) sin, wandering from the path of uprightness and honour to do or go wrong?

(de) And (ei) if (lego) I speak out and teach (aletheia) according to the truth, (diati) Why (humeis) do you (ou) not (pisteuo) believe (moi) me?

47) (on) He that is (ek) out of (theos) God (akouo) hears to comprehend and understand (theos) God’s (rhema) words:

(humeis) You (touto) therefore (dia) on this account (ou) do not (akouo) hear, comprehend or understand, (hoti) because (este) you are (ou) not (ek) out of (theos) God.

48) (oun) Therefore, the Jews (apokrinomai) responded (kai) and (epo) said (autos) to him:

(humeis) Do we (ou) not (lego) maintain (kalos) well and rightly (hoti) that (su) you (ei) are a Samaritan, an inhabitant of the city or region of Samaria, out of Galilee (kai) and (echo) you are closely joined with (daimonion) an evil spirit and you minister for the devil?

49) Jesus (apokrinomai) answered:

(ego) I (ou) am not (echo) closely joined with (daimonion) an evil spirit, nor do I minister for the devil;
(alla) But (timao) I regard with admiration, deep respect and honor (mou) my (pater) Father, (kai) and (humeis) you (atimazo) in word, deed and thought, treat me with contempt, dishonor and insult (me) me.

50) (de) But (ego) I (ou) do not (zeteo) seek after and strive for (mou) my own (doxa) glory;

(esti) There is one (zeteo) that seeks after and strives, (kai) and (krino) examines to pass judgment.

51) (amen) Surely, truly and of a truth (amen) with absolute trust and confidence (lego) I teach and say (humin) to you:

(ean) If (tis) any one (tereo) attends carefully to observe, guard and keep (emos) my (logos) sayings of God, (theoreo) views them mentally and considers them, (ou me) he will never, certainly not, not at all and by no means (eis) into (aion) eternity, (theoreo) see (thanatos) death.

52) (oun) Therefore the Jews (epo) said (autos) to him:

(nun) Now at this present time (ginosko) we know and understand (hoti) that (echo) you are closely joined with (daimonion) an evil spirit and minister for the devil.

Abraham (apothnesko) is dead (kai) and (prophetes) the prophets;

(kai) And (su) you (lego) teach and say;

(ean) If (tis) any one (tereo) attend carefully to observe, guard and keep (mou) my (logos) sayings of God; (ou me) he will never, certainly not, not at all and by no means (geuomai) take food and nourishment to eat (eis) into (aion) eternity, (geuomai) partake of or taste to perceive the flavor of (thanatos) death.

53) (me) Not unless (ei) you (su) are (meizon) greater than (hemon) our (father) forefather Abraham, (hostis) who (apothnesko) is dead, (kai) and (prophetes) the prophets (apothnesko) which are dead:

(tis) Who (poieo) (su) do you make, form and fashion (seautou) yourself to be?

54) Jesus (apokrinomai) answered:

(ean) If (ego) I (doxazo) impart glory and honor (emautou) myself, (mou) my (doxa) glory and honor (esti) is (oudeis) nothing:

(esti) It is (mou) my (pater) Father (doxazo) that imparts glory and honor (me) to me;

(hos) Who (humeis) you (lego) say (hoti) that (esti) he is (humon) your (theos) God.

55) (kai) And (ou) you do not (ginosko) know or understand (autos) him;

(alla) But (ego) I (eido) have seen, know and understand (autos) him:

(kai) And (ean) if (epo) I say (hoti) that (ou) I have not (eido) seen, know or understand (autos) him, (esomai) I would be (pseustes) a liar who breaks my faith, a false and faithless man (homoios) like (humon) all of you are:

(alla) But (eido) I have seen, know and understand (autos) him, (kai) and (tereo) attend  carefully to observe, guard and keep (autos) his (logos) sayings, instruction and moral precepts.

56) (humon) Your (pater) forefather Abraham (agalliao) rejoiced exceedingly (hina) in order to (eido) see (mou) my (hemera) day:

(kai) And (eido) he experienced it, (kai) and (chairo) was exceedingly glad.

57) (oun) With these things being so, the Jews (epo) said (pros) to (autos) him:
(echo) You are (oupo) not yet (pentekonta) fifty (etos) years old, (kai) and (horao) you have seen Abraham?

58) Jesus (epo) said (autos) to them:

(amen) Surely, truly and of a truth (amen) with absolute trust and confidence (lego) I teach and say (humin) to you;

(prin) Before Abraham (ginomai) came into existence, (ego) I (eimi) am.

59) (oun) Therefore (airo) (lithos) they took up small stones from the ground (hina) in order to (ballo) to throw them (epi) at (autos) him:

(de) And Jesus (krupto) escaped their notice (kai) and (exerchomai) went (ek) out of (hieron) the temple, (dierchomai) (dia) passing through (mesos) the middle (autos) of them, (kai) and (houto) in this manner, (parago) passed by them.

We do always give our thanks to God the Father for all things that are in the heaven above and the earth down below, for his righteous and faithful testimonies, for revealing his truth from faith to faith through teaching us the path we must walk, for as he said, the just will live by faith, through the righteousness of faith which was shown to us by our earthly father Abraham, for God said to Abraham and he believed, God instructed Abraham and he obeyed and for the word of God he manifested in the flesh through Lord Jesus Christ and for Lord Jesus showing us how to live by faith. God said to Abraham, Go and he went. Lord Jesus told us to follow him and we did not follow him, but our own ways. We give thanks to God for once again teaching us through his word that he made manifest, which was, which is and which is soon to come the Almighty, so be it, let it be so, may it be fulfilled...In the name of God the Father he made manifest in Lord Jesus, In the name JESUS do we pray always...Amen.
