John Chapter 3

The Gospel According to John

Chapter 3

1) (de) And (en) there was (anthropos) a man (ek) out of the Pharisees (onoma) who named (autos) himself  Nicodemus, which means "conqueror", (archon) a ruler of the Jews:

2) (houtos) This same man (erchomai) went out (pros) to Jesus (nux) by night, (kai) and (epo) said (autos) to him:

(rhabbi) TEACHER, (eido) I perceive (hoti) that you are (didaskalos) a teacher (erchomai) come (apo) from (theos) God:

(gar) For (oudeis) no one (dunamai) is capable, strong and powerful enough (poieo) to perform (tauta) these (semeion) miracles (hos) that (su) you (poieo) perform, (ean me) unless (theos) God (o) is (meta) with (autos) you.

3) Jesus (apokrinomai) responded (kai) and (epo) said (autos) to him:

(amen) Surely, truly and of a truth (amen) with absolute trust and confidence (lego) I say (soi) to you:

(ean me) Unless (tis) a man (gennao) be born (anothen) from above, of God making men his sons through faith in Christ's work;

(dunamai) (ou) He is not able, capable, strong or powerful enough (eido) to obtain the knowledge (basileia) of the kingdom (theos) of God.

4) So Nicodemus (lego) said (pros) to (autos) him:

(pos) How and in what way (anthropos) is a human being (dunamai) capable of (gennao) being born (on) when he is (geron) an old man?

Is he (dunamai) able (eiserchomai) to enter (deueros) for a second time (eis) into (autos) his (meter) mothers (koilia) womb (kai) and (gennao) be born a second time?

5) And Jesus (apokrinomai) answered:

(amen) Surely, truly and of a truth (amen) with absolute trust and confidence (lego) I say (soi) to you:

(ean me) Unless (tis) a man (gennao) is born (hudor) of water (kai) and (pneuma) the Spirit, (ou) he cannot (dunamai) be capable (eiserchomai) of entering into (basileia) the kingdom (theos) of God.

6) (gennao) Anyone that is born (ek) out of (sarx) the flesh, (esti) is (sarx) flesh;

(kai) And (gennao) anyone that is born (ek) out of (pneuma) the Spirit (esti) is (pneuma) spirit.

7) (thaumazo) (me) Do not marvel (hoti) that (epo) I said (soi) to you:

 (dei) It is a necessity that (humas) you (gennao) be born (anothen) from above.

8) (pneuma) The spirit (pneu) blows the wind (hopou) where (thelo) it is determined and it is purposed to go, (kai) and (akouo) you hear (phone) the sound (autos) of it, (alla) but you (ou) cannot (eido) understand (pothen) where (erchomai) it comes from (kai) and (hupago) where it goes away to:

(houto) In this manner, (esti) is (pas) everyone (gennao) that is born (ek) out of (pneuma) the Spirit.

9) And Nicodemus (apokrinomai) responded (epo) and said (autos) to him:

(pos) How and in what way can (tauta) these things (ginomai) begin to be?

10) Jesus (apokrinomai) answered (kai) and (epo) said (autos) to him:

(ei) Aren’t (su) you (didaskalos) a teacher of Israel, (kai) and (ou) you do not (ginosko) have knowledge (tauta) of these things?

11) (amen) Surely, truly and of a truth (amen) with absolute trust and confidence (lego) I say (soi) to you:

(laleo) We speak (hoti) that (hos) which (eido) we do know and understand,  (kai) and (martureo) we do not keep back our testimony (hos) of that (horao) which we see with our eyes and see with our minds, (kai) and (ou) you do not (lambano) receive (hemon) our (marturia) testimony.

12) (ei) If (epo) I have told (humin) you (epigeios) things that exist upon the earth, (kai) and (ou) you do not (pisteuo) believe, (pos) how and in what way (pisteuo) will you believe (ean) if (epo) I tell (humin) you (epouranios) of things that take place in heaven?

13) (kai) And (oudeis) no one (anabaino) has ascended up (eis) to (ouranos) heaven, (ei me) except (katabaino) he that came down (ek) out of (ouranos) heaven, (huios) even the Son (anthropos) man, (ho) that (on) is (en) in (ouranos) heaven.

14) (kai) And (kathos) just as Moses (hupsoo) (ophis) lifted the serpent up on high, (en) in (eremos) the wilderness, (houto) in this manner (dei) it is a necessity (huios) that the Son of (anthropos) man (hupsoo) is lifted up on high to be exalted and raised to dignity, honour and happiness:

15) (hina me) That (pas) everyone (pisteuo) that believes (eis) in (autos) him (ou) will not (apollumni) be lost, ruined or destroyed, (alla) but (echo) will possess (aionios) eternal (zoe) life, the absolute fullness of life, both essential and ethical, which belongs to God.

Life real and genuine, a life active, vigorous and devoted to God.

16) (gar) For (theos) God (houto) in this manner (agapao) dearly loved (kosmos) the world so much, (hoste) that (didomi) he gave up (autos) his (monogenes) only (huios) Son, (hina) so that (pas) everyone (pisteuo) that believes (eis) in (autos) him (me) will not (apollumni) be lost, ruined or destroyed, (alla) but (echo) will possess (aionios) eternal (zoe) life.

17) (gar) For (theos) God (ou) did not (apostello) send (autos) his (huios) Son (eis) into (kosmos) the world (hina) in order (krino) to pass judgment and condemn (kosmos) the world;

(alla) But (hina) so that (kosmos) the world (dia) through (autos) him (sozo) can be saved and rescued from destruction.

18) (pisteuo) He that puts his confidence in and believes (eis) in (autos) me (ou) is not (krino) judged, (de) but (me) he that is not (pisteuo) persuaded to believe and place his confidence in me, (krino) he will be judged (ede) now, (hoti) because (me) he has not (pisteuo) believed  (eis) in (onoma) the name (monogenes) of the only (huios) Son (theos) of God.

19) (de) And (houtos) this (esti) is (krisis) the sentence of condemnation and damnatory judgment, (hoti) that (phos) the Light of the truth, its knowledge and the power of understanding moral and spiritual truth, (erchomai) has come (eis) into (kosmos) the world, (kai) and (anthropos) human beings (agapao) dearly love (skotos) the darkness.

They dearly love their darkened eyesight of blindness and their ignorance concerning divine things, that is joined with ungodliness and immorality.

They love darkness, (mallon) instead of (phos) the Light, (gar) for (autos) their (ergon) deeds and actions (en) are (poneros) wicked, evil and diseased.

20) (gar) For (pas) everyone (prasso) that performs (phaulos) easy, ordinary, mean, worthless, wicked and ethically bad deeds, (miseo) hates (pros) the Light of truth.

(kai) And (ou) does not (erchomai) follow (pros) the Light of truth, (hina me) unless (autos) his (ergon) deeds (elegcho) are severely reprehended, reproved and he is exposed to the Light of truth, which inflicts shame on these people convicted.

21) (de) But (poieo) he that makes ready and performs (aletheia) the true things belonging to God, the true duties of man and moral and religious truth, (erchomai) he follows (pros) the Light of truth, (hina) so that (autos) his (ergon) deeds (phaneroo) are made manifest and evidently known (hoti) that (esti) they are (ergazomai) performed (en) with (theos) God.

22) (meta) After (tauta) these things, Jesus (kai) and (autos) his (mathetes) disciples (erchomai) went (eis) into (ge) the region of Judaea;

(kai) And (ekei) there in that place (diatribo) he spent time and passed time (meta) with (autos) them, (kai) and (baptizo) baptized.

23) (de) And John (kai) also (en) was (baptizo) baptizing (en) in Aenon (eggus) near  Salim, a well known town 8 miles (11 km) south of Scythopolis, (hoti) because (en) there was (palus) a large amount (hudor) of water (ekei) there in that place:

(kai) And (paraginomai) they came to the disciples of Jesus (kai) and (baptizo) were baptized.

24) (gar) For John (en) was (oupo) not yet (ballo) put into (phulake) prison

25) (oun) With these things being so, (ginomai) there began to be (zetesis) a matter of controversy, questionings and debates (meta) with (ek) some of Johns (mathetes) disciples and the Jews, (peri) concerning (katharismos) cleansing and purification.

26) (kai) And (erchomai) they came (pros) to John (kai) and (epo) said (autos) to him:

(rhabbi) TEACHER, (hos) he (en) that was (meta) with (sou) you (peran) on the other side of the Jordan river, (hos) who (martureo) you gave testimony concerning, (ide) Behold and witness with your eyes, (houtos) this man (baptizo) baptizes (kai) and (pas) all (erchomai) men come (pros) to (autos) him.

27) John (apokrinomai) responded (kai) and (epo) said:

(anthropos) A man (dunamai) (ou) is not able (lambano) to receive (oudeis) any one or anything (ean me) unless (o) it is (didomi) given (autos) to him (ek) from (ouranos) heaven.

28) (humeis) You (autos) yourselves (martureo) bear witness to (moi) me (martureo) and heard my testimony, (hoti) that (epo) I said:

(ego) I (eimi) am (ou) not (Christos) Christ the anointed Messiah, (alla) but (hoti) that (eimi) I am (apostello) sent (emprosthen) before (ekeinos) him.

29) (echo) He that lays hold of, clings and is closely joined (numphe) to the bride (esti) is (numphios) the bridegroom:

(de) But (philos) a friend, associate and companion (numphios) of the bridegroom, (ho) that (histemi) stands in his presence (kai) and (akouo) considers what he says and understands him, (chairo) he rejoices exceedingly (chara) and is glad (dia) because of (numphios) the bridegrooms (phone) words:

(houtos) This is (emos) my (chara) joy (oun) therefore, (pleroo) and it is receiving fulfillment.

30) (dei) It is a necessity (ekeinos) that he (auxano) increases with a multitude of people and becomes greater than me, (de) and it is a necessity (eme) that I (elatto) decrease in authority and popularity.

31) (erchomai) He that comes (anothen) from above (esti) is (epano) above (pas) all:

(on) He that is (ek) out of (ge) the inhabitants of the earth (esti) is (ek) out of (ge) the ground of the earth (kai) and (laleo) speaks (ek) out of (ge) the inhabitants of the earth:

(erchomai) He that comes (ek) out of (ouranos) heaven (esti) is (epano) above (pas) all.

32) (kai) And (hos) what (horao) he sees with his eyes and with his mind (kai) and (akouo) gives ear to understand, (touto) those things (martureo) he testifies of;

(kai) Without a doubt, (oudeis) no one (lambano) receives (autos) his (marturia) testimony.

33) (lambano) He that receives (autos) his (marturia) testimony (sphragizo) is marked with a seal, (hoti) that (theos) God (esti) is (alethes) true and speaks the truth.

34) (gar) For (hos) he who (theos) God (apostello) sends, (laleo) speaks (rhema) the words (theos) of God, (gar) for (theos) God (ou) does not (didomi) give (pneuma) the Spirit, (ek) by (metron) a portion measured off to him.

35) (pater) The Father (agapao) dearly loves (huios) the Son, (kai) and (didomi) has given (pas) all things (en) into (autos) his (cheir) hand.

36) (pisteuo) He that puts his confidence in and believes (eis) in (huios) the Son, (echo) holds in his possession (aionios) everlasting (zoe) life that is devoted to God.

(apeitheo) He that does not allow himself to be persuaded, withholds his belief and does not comply with obedience (huios) to the Son, (ou) he will not (optanomai) see (zoe) life; that belongs to God and is devoted to God;

(alla) But (orge) the wrath (theos) of God (meno) waits (epi) on (autos) him.

We do always give our thanks to God for all things in the heaven above and the earth down below, for God making his instruction, sayings and moral precepts flesh in Lord Jesus Christ, for being a faithful Creator and fulfilling his promise in Lord Jesus, the word of God made flesh that dwelled among us, and for giving us the hope of his promise that he will do it again, which was, which is and which is soon to come the Almighty, so be it, let it be so, may it be fulfilled, in the name of the Father given to Lord Jesus, in the name JESUS do I pray...Amen.
