The Gospel According to John
Chapter 4
Chapter 4
1) (hos) Even as (ginosko) it became known (oun) then (kurios) to the Lord, (hoti) that the Pharisees (akouo) were being informed (hoti) that he (poieo) produced (kai) and (baptizo) baptized (pleion) many more (mathetes) disciples (e) than John,
2) (kaitoige) Even though Jesus (autos) himself (ou) did not (baptizo) baptize anyone, (alla) rather, (autos) it was his (mathetes) disciples;
3) (aphiemi) He left Judaea (palin) again, (kai) and (aperchomai) departed (eis) towards Galilee .
4) (de) But in order to reach Galilee (dei) it was necessary (dierchomai) to travel the road which leads (dia) through Samaria , a territory in Palestine .
5) (oun) And it is for this reason, (erchomai) that they later arrived (eis) into (polis) a city in Samaria (lego) called Sychar, (plesion) which eas next (chorion) to the piece of land (hos) that Jacob (didomi) gave (autos) to his (huios) son Joseph.
6) (de) And Jacob’s (pege) well (en) was (ekei) there in that place.
(oun) Therefore, with Jesus (kopiao) growing wearied and tired (ek) from (hodoiporia) their journey, (kathezomai) he sat down (houto) against (pege) the well:
(en) And it was (hosei) nearly (hektos) the sixth (hora) hour.
7) (erchomai) Then there came (gune) a woman (ek) out of Samaria (antleo) in order to draw out (hudor) water from Jacob’s well:
So Jesus (lego) said (autos) to her:
(didomi) (moi) Let me have (pino) a drink.
8) (gar) For (autos) his (mathetes) disciples (aperchomai) had departed (eis) into (polis) the city of Sychar, (hina) in order to (agorazo) go to the marketplace and buy (trophe) food for their nourishment.
9) (oun) Then (gune) the woman from Samaria (lego) said (autos) to him:
(pos) How is it that (su) you, (on) being Jewish, (aiteo) asks for (pino) a drink (para) from (emou) me, (on) that is (gune) a woman of Samaria ?
(gar) For the Jews (ou) do not (sugchraomai) associate or have dealings with us Samaritans.
10) So Jesus (apokrinomai) responded (kai) and (epo) said (autos) to her:
(ei) If (eido) you understood and had the knowledge of (dorea) the gift (theos) of God, (kai) and (tis) who (esti) it is (lego) that says (soi) to you;
(didomi) (moi) Let me have (pino) a drink;
(su) You (an) would (aiteo) have asked (autos) me, (kai) and (an) I would (didomi) of given (soi) you (zao) living (hudor) water, that has vital power in itself and exerts the same upon the soul.
11) (gune) And the woman (lego) said (autos) to him:
(kurios) Sir, (echo) (oute) you have nothing in your hands (antlema) to lower down into the well and draw out water, (kai) and (phrear) this well (esti) is (bathus) deep:
(pothen) From where (oun) then (echo) do you have (zao) this living (hudor) water?
12) (me) Not unless (su) you (ei) are (meizon) greater (hemon) than our (pater) forefather Jacob? (hos) that (didomi) gave (hemin) us (phrear) this well, (kai) and (pino) drank (ek) from it (autos) himself, (autos) he (kai) and (autos) his (huios) children, (kai) and (autos) his (thremma) flock of cattle, sheep and goats.
13) And Jesus (apokrinomai) responded (kai) and (apo) said (autos) to her:
(pas) Everyone (pino) that drinks (ek) from (toutou) this (hudor) water, (dipsao) will suffer from thirst (palin) again, and be of those who painfully feel their want, and eagerly long for those things by which their soul is refreshed, supported and strengthened.
14) (de) And (hos) (an) whosoever (pino) drinks (ek) from (hudor) the water (hos) that (ego) I (didomi) will give (autos) to him , (ou me) he will never (dipsao) suffer from thirst (eis) for (aion) all eternity;
(alla) But (hudor) the water (hos) that (didomi) I will give (autos) to him , (ginomai) it will become (en) in (autos) him (pege) a spring fed fountain (hudor) of water, (hallomai) springing and gushing up (eis) into (aionios) everlasting (zoe) life, which belongs to God.
Life that is real and genuine, a life active and vigorous and devoted to God.
15) (gune) So the woman (lego) said (pros) to (autos) him:
(kurios) Sir, (didomi) (moi) Let me have (touto) this (hudor) water, (hina me) so that I do not (dipsao) suffer from thirst, (mede) and no longer (erchomai) have to come before the public (enthade) here to this place (antleo) in order to draw out water.
16) And Jesus (lego) said (autos) to her:
(hupago) Go away and depart, (phoneo) and send for (sou) your (aner) husband, (kai) and (erchomai) have him follow you (enthade) here.
17) (gune) And the woman (apokrinomai) responded (kai) and (epo) said:
I (ou) do not (echo) have (aner) a husband.
Therefore Jesus (legos) said (autos) to her:
(epo) You have spoken (kalos) rightly, so there is no room for blame, (hoti) by saying (echo) (ou) you do not have (aner) a husband:
18) (gar) For (echo) you have had (pente) five (aner) husbands;
(kai) And (hos) who (echo) you have (nun) now at this very moment in time, (esti) is (ou) not (sou) your (aner) husband:
(touto) In that thing, (ereo) you have spoken (alethes) the truth.
19) (gune) And then the woman (lego) said (autos) to him:
(kurios) Sir, (theoreo) I discern (hoti) that (su) you (ei) are (prophetes) a prophet.
20) (hemon) Our (pater) forefathers (proskuneo) worshipped (en) in (touto) this (oros) very mountain;
(kai) And (humeis) you (lego) say, (hoti) that (en) in Jerusalem (esti) is (topos) the place (hopou) where (dei) it is necessary (proskuneo) to worship.
21) Therefore Jesus (legos) said (autos) to her:
(gune) Woman, (pisteuo) know this to be true and place your confidence in (moi) me;
(hora) A certain and definite time comes (hoti) that (erchomai) will be established (hote) when (proskuneo) (oute) you will not worship (en) in (touto) this (oros) very mountain, (oute) and neither (en) in Jerusalem (proskuneo) will you worship (pater) the Father.
22) (humeis)You (proskuneo) worship (hos) what (eido) (ou) you do not know, perceive or even understand:
(eido) We know and understand (hos) what (humeis) we (proskuneo) worship:
(hoti) Since (soteria) deliverance, preservation and salvation (esti) is (ek) out of the Jews.
23) (alla) But (hora) this certain and definite time (erchomai) will come into being, (kai) without a doubt, (kai) and (nun) now at this present time (esti) is;
(hote) When (alethinos) the real, true and genuine (proskunetes) worshippers (proskuneo) will worship (pater) the Father, (en) in (pneuma) spirit (kai) and (aletheia) according to the truth that belongs to God and the true duties of man with moral and religious truth:
(gar) For (pater) the Father (zeteo) requires and demands (toioutos) such as this kind (proskuneo) to worship (autos) him.
24) (theos) God (pneuma) is a Spirit:
(kai) And (dei) it is necessary (proskuneo) for them that worship (autos) him, (proskuneo) to worship him (en) in (pneuma) spirit (kai) and (aletheia) according to the truth that belongs to God.
25) (gune) So the woman (lego) said (autos) to him:
(eido) I know and understand (hoti) that when Messiah (erchomai) comes, (ho) that (lego) is called (Christos) Christ:
(hotan) That whenever (ekeinos) he (erchomai) comes, (anaggello) he will announce and make known (hemin) to us (pas) all things.
26) And Jesus (legos) said (autos) to her:
(ego) I (laleo) that speak (soi) to you (eimi) am he.
27) (kai) And (epi) upon (touto) this, (erchomai) arrived (autos) his (mathetes) disciples, (kai) and (thaumazo) they marveled (hoti) that (laleo) he spoke (meta) with (gune) a Samarian woman:
(mentoi) But yet, (oudeis) no one (epo) said to him:
(tis) What (zeteo) do you seek after?, (e) or (tis) Why (laleo) do you speak (meta) with (autos) her?
28) (oun) With this being so, (gune) the woman (aphiemi) left behind (autos) her (hudria) water pot, (kai) and (aperchomai) departed (eis) into (polis) her city, (kai) and (lego) said (anthropos) to the inhabitants there:
29) (deute) Come now! (eido) And see with your own eyes (anthropos) a man (hos) that (epo) told (moi) me (pas) all things (hosos) as far as (poieo) I did:
(esti) Is (houtos) this (meti) perchance (Christos) the Christ?
30) (oun) Therefore (exerchomai) the inhabitants came forth (ek) out of (polis) the city, (kai) and (erchomai) went (pros) with (autos) her.
31) (de) And (en) in (metaxu) the mean time, (mathetes) his disciples (erotao) earnestly pleaded (autos) with him (lego) saying:
(rhabbi) TEACHER, (phago) take some food and eat a meal.
32) (de) But (epo) he said (autos) to them:
(ego) I (echo) have (brosis) food, the soul's food, (phago) in order to eat, and it refreshes the soul, nourishes and supports it, (hos) which (humeis) you (ou) do not (eido) have knowledge about or understand.
33) (oun) Therefore, (mathetes) the disciples (lego) said (pros) towards (allelon) one another mutually:
(metis) Has any one (phero) brought (autos) him (phago) any food to eat?
34) So Jesus (lego) said (autos) to them:
(emos) My (broma) food to eat (esti) is (hina) to (poieo) do (thelema) the will, desire and pleasure (pempo) of him that sent (moi) me, (kai) and (teleioo) to carry through completely to the end, accomplish and finish (autos) his (ergon) work.
35) Therefore (ou) Do not (lego) say:
(hoti) There (esti) is (eti) still (tetramenon) four months (kai) and (erchomai) then comes the (therismos) the reaping of the harvest.
(idou) Behold and witness with your eyes (lego) I say (humin) to you:
(epairo) Lift up (humon) your (ophthalmos) eyes and your faculty of knowing, (kai) and (theaomai) attentively view, look upon and contemplate (chora) the fields:
(hoti) Because (eisi) they are (ede) now already (leukos) white, as the whitening color of ripening grain (pros) at (therismos) the reaping of the harvest.
36) (kai) And (therizo) he that reaps the harvest and cuts off and destroys, even as crops are cut down with a sickle, (lambano) he it is that receives (misthos) the wages paid for his work;
(kai) And (sunago) he will gather together (karpos) the fruit of the trees, of the vines, of the fields and of the fruit he produces (eis) into (zoe) life (aionios) eternal:
(hina) So that (kai) both (speiro) he that sows and scatters seed (kai) and (therizo) he that reaps the harvest (chairo) will thrive and rejoice exceedingly, (homou) of people assembled together.
37) (gar) For (en) with (touto) this one saying (esti) is (logos) the following saying (alethinos) real, true and genuine:
(hoti) That (allos) one (esti) is (speiro) the sower that scatters the seed (kai) and (allos) another (therizo) is the reaper.
38) (ego) I (apostello) sent (humas) you (therizo) to reap the harvest, (hos) in which (humeis) you (kopiao) grew tired, weary and exhausted (ou) without even doing any (kopiao) labor:
(allos) Other men (kopiao) have labored, (kai) and (humeis) you (eiserchomai) are entered (eis) into (autos) their (kopos) intense labors, and are now united with troubles and toils.
39) (de) And (polus) a large amount of the Samaritans (ek) out of (ekeinos) her (polis) city (pisteuo) placed their confidence in him and believed (eis) on (autos) him;
(dia) Because of (logos) the saying (gune) of the Samarian woman (martureo) who did not keep back her testimony:
(hoti) That (epo) he told (moi) me (pas) all things (hosos) as far as (poieo) I did.
40) (oun) Therefore, (hos) as the Samaritans (erchomai) arrived (pros) in regard to (autos) him, (erotao) they asked of (autos) him (meno) to remain and stay temporarily (para) with (autos) them:
(kai) And (meno) he remained to stay (ekei) there in that place, (duo) two (hemera) days.
41) (kai) And (polus) many (pleion) more (pisteuo) were persuaded of him and believed (dia) because of (autos) his own (logos) sayings;
42) (te) Not only did they believe in him, but they also (lego) said (gune) to the woman out of Samaria:
(hoti) That (ouketi) we no longer (pisteuo) believe (hoti) because (dia) of (sos) your (lego) saying:
(gar) For (akouo) we have heard him and found out (autos) for ourselves, (kai) and (eido) know and understand, (hoti) that (houtos) this (esti) is (alethos) most certainly (Christos) Christ the anointed Messiah, (soter) the saviour, deliverer and preserver (kosmos) of this world.
43) (de) And (meta) after (duo) two (hemera) days (aperchomai) he departed (exerchomai) to come forth (ekeithen) from that place (kai) and (eis) into Galilee .
44) (gar) For Jesus (autos) himself (martureo) testified, (hoti) that (prophetes) a prophet (ou) does not (echo) have (time) that honour which belongs to him and should be shown to him, (en) in (idios) his own (patris) native country and home..
45) (oun) With this being so, (hote) whenever (erchomai) he arrived and came before the public (eis) into Galilee, the Galilaeans (dechomai) received him favorably and hospitably gave ear to his teachings, so that they could learn (autos) from him;
(horao) For they became acquainted with him through experience and seen with their own eyes (pas) everything (poieo) that he performed (en) in Jerusalem , (en) at (heorte) the festival of the feast day:
(gar) For (autos) they (kai) also (erchomai) went (eis) to (heorte) the festival.
46) (oun) Therefore, Jesus (erchomai) came forth and arrived (palin) again (eis) into Cana of Galilee, (hopou) where (poieo) he turned (hudor) the water (oinos) into wine.
(kai) And (en) there was (tis) a certain (basilikos) nobleman, (hos) whose (huios) son (astheneo) was weak and sick (en) in Capernaum .
47) (houtos) When he (akouo) therefore found out (hoti) that Jesus (heko) had arrived (ek) out of Judaea (eis) and was presently in Galilee, (aperchomai) he departed Capernaum and went after (autos) him (hina) in order to (katabaino) send him down to Capernaum, (kai) and (iaomai) cure (autos) his (huios) son:
(gar) For (mello) he was about (apothnesko) to die.
48) (oun) Therefore Jesus (epo) said (pros) to (autos) him:
(ean me) Unless (eido) (semeion) you see signs with your eyes (kai) and (teras) miracles that are performed by me, (ou me) you will not (pisteuo) have confidence in me and believe in me.
49) (basilikos) Then the nobleman (lego) said (pros) to (autos) him:
(kurios) Lord, (katabaino) come down to Capernaum , (prin) before (mou) my (paidion) little child (apothnesko) dies.
50) So Jesus (lego) said (autos) to him:
(poreuomai) Continue on your way, (sou) your (huios) son (zao) lives.
(kai) And (anthropos) the man (pisteuo) believed (logos) the saying (hos) that Jesus (epo) spoke (autos) to him (kai) and (poreuomai) he went his way.
51) (de) And (autos) as he (ede) was now (katabaino) going back down to Capernaum, (autos) his (doulos) attendants (apantao) met up with (autos) him, (kai) and (apaggello) brought him good news (lego) saying:
(hoti) That (sou) your (pais) child (zao) lives.
52) (oun) With this being so, (punthanomai) he asked (para) of (autos) them (hora) what time (en) it was, (hos) that (echo) he began (kompsoteron) to get better.
(kai) And (epo) they said (autos) to him:
(hoti) That (chthes) it was yesterday, (hebdomos) at the seventh (hora) hour (puretos) is when his fever (aphiemi) let go (autos) of him.
53) (oun) Then (pater) the father of the child (ginosko) knew, (hoti) that (en) it was (ekeinos) the same (hora) hour (en) in (hos) which Jesus (epo) said (autos) to him:
(hoti) That (sou) your (huios) son (zao) lives:
(kai) And (autos) he (pisteuo) believed in him, (kai) and (autos) his (holos) whole (oikia) family.
54) (palin) Furthermore (touto) This (deuteros) was the second (semeion) sign and miracle that Jesus (poieo) performed, (erchomai) when he came (ek) out of Judaea (eis) into Galilee .
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and according to his abundant mercy, we maybe born of him again, and cling, adhere and be closely joined with a living breathing hope through the resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ from the dead.
And through his resurrection from the dead, he ascended up into his incorruptible inheritance that never fades away and is reserved for us in heaven who are kept by the power of God through our faith that leads us into our salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
Therefore do we look up into the heavens with our eyes and with our minds, lifting our hands on high, for our redemption draws near.
Therefore do we always give our thanks to God for all things that ever were and ever will be, for his truth that he made flesh to show us the way, for his selfless sacrafice that we do not deserve, done by him so that others that live through him might have life eternal in Lord Jesus Christ, which was, which is and which is soon to come the Almighty, so be it, let it be so, may it be fulfilled...in the name of the Father made known to us by Lord Jesus himself, in the name JESUS do I pray...Amen.
