The Gospel According to John
Chapter 2
1) (kai) And (tritos) on the third (hemera) day (ginomai) there was (gamos) a wedding banquet (en) in Cana, a village in Galilee about 5 miles (8 km) NW from Nazareth;
(kai) And (meter) the mother of Jesus (en) was (ekei) there in that place:
2) (de) And Jesus (kai) was also (kaleo) invited, (kai) along with (autos) his (mathetes) disciples, (eis) to come (gamos) to the wedding.
3) (kai) And (hustereo) they arrived late to the banquet and Jesus wanted (oinos) some wine, (meter) and his mother (lego) said (pros) to (autos) him:
(echo) They have (ou) no more (oinos) wine.
4) So Jesus (legos) said (autos) to her:
(gune) Woman, (tis) who (emoi) am I (kai) without a doubt (soi) to you?
(mou) My (hora) fixed and definite time (heko) that is to come upon me (oupo) is not yet (heko) come upon me.
5) (autos) So his (meter) mother (legos) said (diakonos) to the waiters, who were serving the food and drink:
(hostis) Whatever (lego) he says (humin) to you, (poieo) make it ready.
6) (de) And (en) there was (keimai) set (ekei) there in that place (hex) six (hudria) vessels for holding water (lithinos) that were made of stone, (kata) and they were purified according to the Jews (katharismos) ritual act of purgation, (choreo) while leaving room for (duo) two (e) or (treis) three (metretes) measurers (ana) among them.
A measurer is the name of a utensil known as an amphora, which is a type of measure that is used for liquids and contains somewhat less than nine English gallons.
7) And Jesus (lego) said (autos) to them :
(gemizo) Fill (hudria) the water jars full (hudor) with water.
(kai) And (gemizo) they filled (autos) them (gemizo) full (heos) to (ano) the brim.
8) (kai) And (lego) Jesus said (autos) to them:
(antelo) Draw out (nun) now at this time, (kai) and (phero) bring it (architriklinos) to the superintendent of the dining room, who is the table master.
The table master differs from the toast-master, who is one of the guests that is selected by lot, to prescribe to the rest the mode of drinking.
The table masters duty was to place in order the tables and the couches, arrange the courses, taste the food and wine beforehand, and so forth.
(kai) And (phero) so the waiters brought it forth to him.
9) (de) And (hos) as (architriklinos) the table master (geuomai) tasted and enjoyed the flavor (hudor) of the water (ginomai) that was made into (oinos) wine, (kai) and he truly (ou) did not (eido) know (pothen) from where (esti) it was from:
(de) But (diakonos) the waiters (ho) that (antleo) drew (hudor) the water, (eido) they knew;
(architriklinos) So the table master (phoneo) summoned (numphios) the bridegroom.
10) (kai) And (lego) then said (autos) to him:
(pas) Every (anthropos) man (proton) at first (tithemi) sets forth (kalos) good (oinos) wine;
(kai) And (hotan) as soon as (methuo) you are become drunk, (tote) then at that time, (elasson) you are made worse;
(su) You (tereo) have guarded (kalos) the good (oinos) wine (heos) until (arti) this very moment.
11) (taute) This (arche) is the beginning and origin (semeion) of the miracles (poieo) that were performed by Jesus (en) in Cana of Galilee, (kai) and where he (phaneroo) clearly made manifest (autos) his (doxa) kingly authority and power as the Messiah;
(kai) And (autos) his (mathetes) disciples (pisteuo) believed (eis) on (autos) him there.
12) (meta) After (touto) the banquet was over, (katabaino) they came down (eis) to Capernaum, a flourishing city of Galilee situated on the north western shore of the Lake of Gennesaret, also called the Sea of Galilee.
(autos) He (kai) and (autos) his (meter) mother (kai) and (autos) his (adelphos) brethren, (kai) and (autos) his (mathetes) disciples:
(kai) And (meno) remained (ekei) there in that place (ou) not (polus) many (hemera) days.
13) (kai) And (loudaios) the Jews (pascha) feast of the Passover, extending from the 14th to the 20th day of the month Nisan, the first month of their year (en) was (eggus) near, (kai) and Jesus (anabaino) went up (eis) to Jerusalem.
14) (kai) And (heurisko) there he discovered (en) by (hieron) the temple at Jerusalem , (poleo) those that were bartering and selling (bous) oxen (kai) and (probaton) horses, sheep, goats (kai) and (peristera) doves.
(kai) And he also discovered (kermatistes) money changers and money brokers (kathemai) who had fixed places that they were seated at.
In the court of the Gentiles, in the temple at Jerusalem, were the seats of those who sold such animals for sacrifice as had been selected, examined, and approved, together with incense, oil, and other things needed for making offerings in worship; and the magnitude of this traffic had introduced the banker's and broker's business.
15) (kai) And (poieo) when Jesus had made (phragellion) a whip (ek) out of (schoinion) rope and the stem rushes of a marsh plant;
(ekballo) He used it to cast them out and drove them (pas) all (ek) away from (hieron) the temple (te) and away from (probaton) the horses, sheep, goat (kai) and (bous) the oxen;
(kai) And (ekcheo) poured out (kollubistes) the changers and bankers (kerma) money, (kai) and (anastrepho) turned upside down (trapeza) the tables where the money changers and bankers sat;
16) (kai) And (epo) then he said (poleo) to them that bartered and sold (peristera) the doves:
(airo) Remove yourselves and carry off (tauta) these things (enteuthen) from this place;
(me) Do not (poieo) make (mou) my (pater) Fathers (oikos) house, (oikos) a house (emporion) where trade is carried on, a marketplace or the center of a trade emporium.
17) (de) And (autos) his (mathetes) disciples (mnaomai) remembered (hoti) that (esti) it was (grapho) written in the scripture:
(zelos) The zeal (sou) of your (oikos) house (katesthio) has eaten (me) me (katesthio) up to strip you of your goods.
18) (oun) With these things being so, the Jews (apokrinomai) began to speak in reference to what he had just done (kai) and (epo) they said (autos) to him:
(tis) What (semeion) sign (deiknuo) will you show us in order to give evidence and proof (hemin) to us, (hoti) since (poieo) you carry out and execute (tauta) these things?
19) Jesus (apokrinomai) answered (kai) and (lego) said (autos) to them:
(luo) You will undermine, corrupt, break up, overthrow and completely destroy (touton) this (naos) temple, (kai) and (en) in (treis) three (hemera) days (egeiro) I will cause it to be born and raise (autos) it up (egeiro) from the sleep of death and recall the dead to life.
20) (oun) With this being so, (loudaios) the Jews (epo) said:
(tessarakonta) Forty (kai) and (hex) six (etos) years (oikodomeo) it took us to establish (houtos) this (naos) temple at Jerusalem, (oikodomeo) to build it up from the foundation, (kai) and (su) you (egeiro) will build (autos) it up (egeiro) and erect it (en) in (treis) three (hemera) days?
21) (de) But (ekeinos) he (lego) spoke (peri) concerning (naos) the temple (autos) of his (soma) body, which also consists of the men that are closely united into one society with him, or family as it were.
22) (oun) Therefore, (hote) when (egeiro) Jesus was raised up (ek) from (nekros) the dead, (autos) his (mathetes) disciples (mnaomai) remembered (hoti) that (lego) he said (touto) this thing (autos) to them;
(kai) And (pisteuo) they believed and put their confidence in (graphe) the Scripture, (kai) and (logos) the sayings of God, (hos) that Jesus (epo) had said.
23) (de) And (hos) as (en) he was (en) in Jerusalem (en) at (pascha) the Passover (en) on (heorte) the feast day, (polus) many (pisteuo) believed (eis) in (autos) his (onoma) name, (theoreo) when they saw with their own eyes (autos) his (semeion) miracles (hos) that (poieo) he performed.
24) (de) But Jesus (ou) did not (pisteuo) commit (heautou) himself (autos) to them, (dia) because (autos) he (ginosko) knew and understood (pas) all men.
25) (kai) Even (hoti) because (ou) it was not (chreia) a necessity (echo) to be closely joined with them, (hina) so that (tis) a certain (martureo) would give a good report about him (peri) because of (anthropos) the merchantmen:
(gar) For (autos) he (ginosko) knew (tis) what (en) was (en) in (anthropos) man.
